Food Storage

A long term supply, items for storage up to
one year, should include grains, legumes
and other items that store for an extended
period of time.  The main purpose of such
items is to provide a suppliment to items in
your 3 month supply, as well as provide
sufficicient food supply to keep you & your
family alive if a calamity should occur.

Now, more then ever, is the time to get
serious about home storage!  Economic
times are changing, and doing without may
become a fact of life for many of us.  Yet, we
must provide for ourselves the best economic
ways to be prepared for a more serious
possible calamity!

How much do I need?

Extensive information about how much long
term storage can be found at the church
website located
here.

What if I don't have space?

Space can be found by removing and storing
wardrobe items that you no longer wear.  Any
member can install shelving for food storage
underneath the upper clothes hanger racks
in walk in closets.  In most cases, this in itself
can profide at least 3 months worth of food
storage, and additional space for long term
storage can be obtained by using space
underneath beds, or other closets such as
the hallway closet.  Storage garages are not
the best because of the variance of
temperatures found in them.

Why Store for long term?

For those members, such as those that live
in the Thorneberry or Atrium apartments, I
suggest, at least a 3 month supply then a
supply of additional items such as grains &
legumes where possible.  We may not have
room for a total year supply, but we must do
what we can.  This will not only provide for us
in times of need, such as unemployment or
calamity, but can also provide a curb against
inflation.   By storing grains, you can learn
how to make your own bread, and other
items that will cost less than buying them in
the local supermarket.  Further, grains
purchased at today's price, will most certainly
cost less now than a year from now, pro-
viding a hedge against inflation.  Basic
recepies for longer term food storage items
can be found on a church pamphlet located
here on this website.  My personal whole
wheat bread machine recepie can be found
here.

Water Storage

Where possible, members are encouraged to
store water, or at least have a way to purify
water.  Water purification methods can be
found on the
3 Month Supply page.

Store drinking water for circumstances in
which the water supply may be polluted or
disrupted.
If water comes directly from a good,
pretreated source, then no additional
purification is needed; otherwise, pretreat
water before use. Store water in sturdy,
leak-proof, breakage-resistant containers.
Consider using plastic bottles commonly
used for juices and soft drinks.

Keep water containers away from heat
sources and direct sunlight.

More information about water storage can be
found on the church website located
here.
Members to go here to fill out the order from
on the church website, print it out, and go to
the church cannery and perform labor for the
items they need on the list.  Items obtained
are then purchased at substantially reduced
rate.  If you do go to the cannery for the first
time, I suggest you go with an open mind and
willing to learn.
