Alert notification is the process by which the
organization notifies its members of an actual
emergency.  There are various methods
which include contact by telephone, email, cell
phone texting, pager texting, and even door to
door contacting.   Our organization has
chosen the following method of alerting our
membership of an emergency.

Home Teaching Hierarchy
In every emergency the Bishop/Branch
president or Emergency Coordinator will
contact the Elders Quorum President.   The
Elders Quorum President (along with
counselors and/or volunteers) will then travel
to the Emergency Coordinator house or
apartment to start contacting home teachers
to notify them of the emergency. An
emergency is defined as any event from color
code Green or Yellow to Orange, Red or Blue
(see the
Action Plan on this website). Home
Teachers will then contact EVERY family they
are responsible for.  Once telephone calls to
home teachers is completed, the Elders
Quorum President (along with counselors
and/or volunteers) may be asked for further
assistance from the Emergency Coordinator
for further contacting.
Texting: Cell phone, Pager
and Email Notification
In any color change in the Branch Alert
System, members that have pre-registered
their pagers, cell phones & email IDs to
receive text alerts will receive them from the
Branch Emergency Coordinator.  A sample of
text messages can be seen
here. In any color
change or emergency, these devices will be
sent a broadcast email sent by the Emergency
Coordinator informing them of a disaster and
give further instructions.  If the individual has a
cell phone and/or pager that has the ability to
receive text alerts, they will NOT receive an
individual telephone call (See “Telephone
Calls” to the right).  If the individual only has
email, they will receive a telephone call.  All
members will also receive notification from the
Home Teaching Hierarchy.

Emergency Alert Registration for texting is
done when a member moves into the ward and
fills out a form completed by individual member
given to them by the membership clerk.  The
membership clerk will then register the
individual by turning the completed form over
to the Emergency Coordinator.   The
Emergency Coordinator will then register all
Cell Phone, Pager & email IDs that can receive
text messages.  For more information click the
Emergency Alert Registration on this website.
Telephone Calls
This method is used when a member does not
have a cell phone or pager that has texting
ability.   These individuals receive individual
telephone calls (to home or work) as directed by
the Emergency Coordinator. All members will
also receive notification from the Home
Teaching Hierarchy method.

Emergency Alert Registration for home and work
telephone calls are done when a member moves
into the ward and fills out a form completed by
individual members given to them by the
membership clerk.  The membership clerk will
then register the individual by turning the
completed form over to the Emergency
Coordinator.   The Emergency Coordinator will
then compile the forms which include all
telephone numbers to receive individual calls.

If budget permits, the home telephone method
may be done automatically via an emergency
notification service.  This service sends out a
pre-recorded message to a pre-defined
telephone list of members which call them
(similar to reverse 911) and informs them of an
emergency.  The services costs anywhere from
$50 to $150 per use for an entire ward
(depending on how many telephone numbers
are registered).  In the future,
telecommunications companies may offer a
voice broadcast product as part of their free
features.  For now, voice broadcast is only
available through emergency notification
companies.
Door to Door
This method is used when the member cannot
be contacted via the Telephone Call method
listed above and don’t have texting ability.  The
emergency Coordinator will direct the Elders
Quorum President (along with counselors and/or
volunteers) to go to the individual apartment or
home and physically knock on the door to inform
members of the emergency.  If they can’t be
contacted, they will leave a notice on the front
door of the member informing them of the
emergency.
